Does anyone besides me find the last names of the students in Blackwell a bit odd?
I have noticed that Blackwell is somewhat diverse by having one African-American student, two African-American school workers, and a couple of students that appear to be of different ethnic groups. Sure, there are likely more African-American students, as well as more teachers than the science and the camera teacher, I do find it odd that characters like Brooke, Evan, Stella, and a few others all have European last names. Brooke and Evan clearly looks Asian, while Stella could be of Asian Indian descent. Perhaps Evan and Brooke are adopted. As for Stella, it isn't unheard of for Asian Indians to have English last names because of the history Britain has had with India. Still, it is rather odd.

I love how all these other threads are plotting the storyline and this one is just commenting on the surnames of students xD

Well, to be frank, half of those other threads are about Nathan being a hot, crazy antihero or Chloe being a bratty girl trying to get into Max's pants.

Amen, brother. At least this thread is a pretty original debate.

Isn't Blackwell known as one of the best art schools in the US? That's probably why.

That stll does not explain the surnames as a few students like Stella and Max came from scholarships. Also, some foreign wealthy ppl could send their kids to study abroad

Thanks. Although I do enjoy the Chloe debates, I've notice that the majority of the threads here were on something else, but have transformed into a Nathan being good or a Chloe being in love with Max and why topics.

Daniel is clearly hispanic and he is called Daniel Da Costa. Other than him, I haven't noticed anyone with a strong foreign-sounding accent (which is not to say there aren't foreign students at Blackwell, just none we've met).

African-Americans don't always have distinctive surnames unless they're first/second gen immigrants, so names like Jones and such are pretty common (Derrick Jones comes to mind, etc). Also worth noting that a lot of immigrants before the 80's would change their last name upon arrival to the US, in order to avoid persecution. There's more diversity currently, though.

Also Max is indeed a scholarship student but she says she's from Arcadia Bay originally. Stella Hill is an odd name though. Haven't heard of any Indian Hills (heh), but she could come from a mixed family, I suppose? Same goes for Brooke, maybe. Interesting discussion!

The names of the students didn't really bother me some throughout my whole playthrough of the game. But now that you mentioned it yeah some names don't seem to fit in well, but it ain't a negative in my book.

I was fine with the names, but only because people have similiar "unfitting names", if you can call them that. So I guess I am just used to it?

Makes sense because at my school when I hear people's names some of them don't match up to their ethnic group, but its whatever.

I think you're overthinking it a bit . Bar them being 1st generation children it shouldnt surprise anyone that the look doesnt fit the last name and theres no proof they are .

With Brooke, she could be mixed or adopted. With mixed ppl, one can somewhat tell that the person is mixed, though not all the time. We also know that Brooke comes from a wealthy family considering the gadgets she owns. If Bradangelina has told us anything, the wealthy like s to adopt kids from foreign countries. That said, Brooke can be adopted.

I think they just forgot to do a check to see if the last names "matched" with the characters' ethnicities. Good on them for making an effort to portray a diverse student society regardless.

And yeah, I've met numerous people who have "unfitting" last names due to marriage or adoption. A white teacher of mine in high school was named Mrs Iwasaki because she obviously has a Japanese husband. My friend is of French descent, and his adopted daughter (of full Vietnamese ethnicity) took on his French last name.

And of course lots of multiracial people have physical traits dominated by one parent more than the other's.

I think they did a good job at showing some American coastal diversity despite being a French developer. France is 85% white, the only other ethnicity making it into double digits being North Africans (10%). So I think they tried, even if it doesn't feel quite authentic.

And so French Indochina is rightfully formed once more.
