Relationship between David and Nathan? (Spoilers)

So, in Episode 3 we read those two lines of Nathan in his school files:

"David M. always asks what's going on in my head."
"David M. always helps me follow those he follows."

So, what was exactly the relationship between them?

We know that Nathan accused Rachel of bringing drugs on campus and David supported this statement. Also we can see both of them "talking" (it more looked like an argument) at the beginning of Episode 2.

And we can find a note from Sean Prescott in David's garage thanking him for helping Nathan.

In Episode 5 David said that he knew that Nathan was a threat and he waited too long to stop him.

What brings me back to the upper two statements. Maybe I just don't get it, but why did Nathan say that? As a joke or what?

The first statement is maybe a reference to David having suspicions and investigating Nathan's actions. The second is maybe a joke by Nathan about how David is accidentally making it easier for him to target vulnerable young women.

But how does David make it easier when he's investigating about it? Also he wants cameras all over the place which would make it even harder to continue the Dark Room thing.
As the two were talking it also remembered me a little bit of the talk between Kate and David. David pointed his finger on him and take a step in his direction. The difference is that Nathan didn't back off. Seems like David was threating him which would put Nathan under more pressure. So why would he say those things about David?

Don't you find a letter from the Prescotts thanking David for something he did for Nathan? Also their guns look a quite similar, and Max comments when finding the manual for it in Nathan's room that it was probably a gift.

Now, if somehow Nathan had access to David's files somehow, he could possibly track other people as well, making it easier to follow who he was tracking. Didn't see much sense in that, tho.

That's also a point, you're right. And yeah, that's the mystery of Davids gun. Even when you don't kick him out, a second gun is missing. Hm ... I mean, it's quite possible. :)

So you mean that Nathan could know who David was tracking? I don't know, maybe. But it wouldn't be much use for him. :D

Yes, Nathan loved her, but he accused her. David only sided with Nathan on this statement.
