Now that I've had time to think about it, it's maybe the greatest betrayal I've ever seen in a video game plot, both in the sense of Max betraying her bond with Chloe and betraying her own ideals and everything she's fought and struggled for up to that point. It's so horrifyingly bleak and out-of-character that it feels like it was written by someone who was given a basic outline of the story and had no idea what character they were writing for.
