Ascertain it's a game related problem and if it is just tinker with both in-game audio settings and windows audio settings (try to set it to the simplest), try as well to clear the game's cache through the Steam client a/o even remove the entirety of the sound folders (to obviously bring them back up). If none of those work, reinstall the game and hope for the best.
This is all a bit technical.
Try to verify the game cache as theanti EZEZ suggested and let us know if it worked.
And also, use the tech support section next time.
The sound cuts out at the exact same sections each time even after restarting pc, changing settings, checking connections etc. And when I say sound I mean just the voices, the music continues to play.
Sound is working perfectly for EVERYTHING else, all other games, music software, movies etc.
I have tried it both in stereo (fixed it in certain sections) eg chapter 1 walking up to the lighthouse to meet the girl there was no sound here until I changed to stereo but then it reaches the end of that section where the main character starts to pass out and I can see the 2 people talking to each other (mouths moving) but only music plays. I also tried with full surround sound and this just gives even more sections with no voices.
It must be a sound channel issue because when the main character talks to herself then it all works fine again. maybe I will have to try it in mono or through the monitor speakers....

Next, please post a list with all connected sound devices (eg headset, speaker), which channel they support and how they are connected to your pc (eg. 3.5 mm audio jack, USB, HDMI/DP digital audio).
My pc is pluged on the tv in hdmi, and the tv is set as "default device" for the sound. near the end of chapter 1, suddenly, only the voice came from the PC speakers while the music and background music came from the tv.
config is set as stereo.
funny, never got this issue with any games before.
As soon as I hit the pause menu button I can hear the music... so its not my headset or other sound settings.
Having the same problem.. what was the cause of the problem?
I went into the sound settings on my PC made sure the right speakers where set then hit troubleshoot. When it runs this is sets the source your troubleshooting as default. Issue solved.,
