Sound problem, no voices
I have a problem that the game plays fine sometimes and other timees I can't hear the voices.
i looked online and one fix was to play in stereo and not surround sound and that worked for one part where there were no voices but there are still other sections where characters mouths move but no sound comes out.
Not really able to play a story based game with half the story missing, anybody got a fix?

Are you certain the problem is coming from the game? It's pretty weird sometimes it works and sometimes it does not, being the sound output exactly the same. Has this ever happened with any other games of yours? Might be a sound driver problem/conflict, or even related to your hardware.

Ascertain it's a game related problem and if it is just tinker with both in-game audio settings and windows audio settings (try to set it to the simplest), try as well to clear the game's cache through the Steam client a/o even remove the entirety of the sound folders (to obviously bring them back up). If none of those work, reinstall the game and hope for the best.

It's possible that there may be a faulty configuration of your driver/sound hardware. I have a surround headset where I can press a button and the headset switches from 7.1 output to stereo (2.0) output. The game sends the audio on the other channels (like when someone speaks behind you) and when the stereo mode is enabled you won't here these voices.
This is all a bit technical.

Try to verify the game cache as theanti EZEZ suggested and let us know if it worked.

And also, use the tech support section next time.

No I am absolutely certain it is the game.
The sound cuts out at the exact same sections each time even after restarting pc, changing settings, checking connections etc. And when I say sound I mean just the voices, the music continues to play.
Sound is working perfectly for EVERYTHING else, all other games, music software, movies etc.

I have tried it both in stereo (fixed it in certain sections) eg chapter 1 walking up to the lighthouse to meet the girl there was no sound here until I changed to stereo but then it reaches the end of that section where the main character starts to pass out and I can see the 2 people talking to each other (mouths moving) but only music plays. I also tried with full surround sound and this just gives even more sections with no voices.

It must be a sound channel issue because when the main character talks to herself then it all works fine again. maybe I will have to try it in mono or through the monitor speakers....

Try this:

Next, please post a list with all connected sound devices (eg headset, speaker), which channel they support and how they are connected to your pc (eg. 3.5 mm audio jack, USB, HDMI/DP digital audio).

Ok, so I was having this same problem. My soundcard has autosense ports and i think somehow they lost connection. I reconnected my speakers and now I have voices again. Hope this helps.

not a solution, but something interesting i got:
My pc is pluged on the tv in hdmi, and the tv is set as "default device" for the sound. near the end of chapter 1, suddenly, only the voice came from the PC speakers while the music and background music came from the tv.
config is set as stereo.

funny, never got this issue with any games before.

How have you fixed it? I also have no sound at a few cut szenes, neither for the creator commentaries.
As soon as I hit the pause menu button I can hear the music... so its not my headset or other sound settings.

I wish I knew how you fixed it, I have the same issue, voices cut out at a certain scene, but music and sound effects all working. Started where Max met Cloe and Nathan came in all bad ass in the parking lot. Where it started for me.

Having the same problem.. what was the cause of the problem?
Go to Playback Devices settings and make sure the the headphones you're listening through is fully default. Then restart your game. One playback device may say "Communication Default", I don't know why, but that was the case with me. So, click the device you want to hear through, hit "Set Default" button on the bottom of the tab, then restart your game. It should work then. I hope I helped.

I found a much easier solution for myself. I noticed in the sound settings that the port my headphones were plugged into were labeled "Speaker Out", but that another port on my machine was labeled headphones. I just unplugged my headphones from the port in the back of my tower and plugged them in the front. This solved it for me.

I went into the sound settings on my PC made sure the right speakers where set then hit troubleshoot. When it runs this is sets the source your troubleshooting as default. Issue solved.,
