However, it was also on sale during the time of the spike, being $15 instead of $20, so I would say more than half bought the full game during this time, as this was basically offering ANOTHER free episode.
However, seems Achievements can help us out, if you look at the global stats:
70% got Photo #1 (that's the selfie at the start, right?), so let's say that 70% of the (free) downloaders actually started the game. 55% finished Episode 1, and thus the free download.
The next episodes were finished by resp. 36%, 32%, 29% and 27%, and I guess everyone in between those percentages is "in progress".
So if the 2.5M mentioned above is correct, I'd say about 1.75M started the game, 1.4M completed the free episode, and nearly 1M has bought the full version. [EDIT: Assuming Steamspy's 2.5M is counting the free Episode 1!]
But thats in line of most global stats where most people do not finish games. For Xcom 2, only 36% overthrew the aliens.
From the release to 1.5 M, before the episode went free, I assume most bought the full game and Square Enix mentioned that the attach rate was very high, its the other 1 M they gained that is more debatable.
However the sales glut did stop after LIS went off sale days after Episode 1 became free and hovers around 2.5 M owners. Once again, there was a period where TWO episodes were basically free.
And really, the best thing to measure the success by is episodes sold, like what Telltale does. I do think LIS has passed all Telltale games (individually, not combined) in this department, for certain, outside the first season of TWD. However, LIS may have passed TWD S1 and if it hasn't, it will.
I think that's rather unlikely.

Well the "series" sold 8,5 mil. There are 3 games by ( season 1+2 + the spinoff) now so if you split that up i think it should be around the same sales as LiS.
Here is a later article: http://www.techtimes.com/articles/11417/20140728/walking-dead-video-game-telltale-games.htm
BUT that doesn't mean that LiS shouldn't win it. It just means we're more hipster.
Walking Dead has also the advantage of a famous comic series for years and a popularl tv series.
Its just better brand recognition. I mean, i liked both Walking Dead seasons by Telltale, but LiS is a whole other level for me.
Here is the thing. That is for the franchise, not TWD S1 alone.
Nevermind that TWD S1 also has a sixth DLC episode.
LIS last year did surpass Borderlands, Minecraft, and Game of Thrones combined on Steam, and Batman stumbled out of the gate it seems.
I do think Telltale has hit the wall and their sales have declined. They keep doing the same thing over and over, and repeating the same mistakes over and over.
I totally agree with that, the best thing Telltale could do is hire NEW producers and get rid of the ones they have, because it is the producers in development that get to say if the game is going to go in new directions in terms of new ideas, new game engine, etc.
The clunky movement system in Telltale games is their biggest downfall because it makes exploration way to much of a chore, so they have to scale down the size of all areas in the game so that part of their game engine does not show as bad as it would with larger areas for exploration would.
Lis with its movement system with mouse look steering or controller steering is so much better, as opposed to Telltale's terrible WASD movement system. Until they fix that problem with their games they will decline in sales until they either go out of business or they start using a better game engine like Unreal 4.
Not to mention they really do need to come up with their own ideas instead of licensing IP's like Batman, Game of Thrones, Minecraft, etc.
So with a mobile release, its not a matter of "if", but "when".
Dreamfall and Dreamfall Chapters also plays better than Telltale games as well. Dreamfall Chapters have explorable city hubs.
Thanks for reminding me that I have Dreamfall Chapters in my Steam library and I have yet to play it! :)
