How can I avoid copyrighted music?
I'm preparing my first Life is Strange video but the one thing I worry about is not knowing what music is copyrighted.

And I can't even afford to get copyright claims, not only copyright strikes, because my YouTube partnership is that strict about copyright, so if I even get at least a simple copyright claim, there goes my partnership. And I can't just unmonitze it because my partnership sets all my videos as permanently monitized.

So, is there any way I can allow the music to be used in my monitized gameplay videos without any copyright claim problems that will affect my partnership?

I already tried asking on the Life is Strange Twitter page.

I can't be sure, but I believe you are allowed to upload your playthroughs to YouTube with no issues. There are tonnes of people with videos on the game, and they don't seem to have any problems. I'd say it's pretty safe.

I've created Life Is Strange videos for YouTube myself but i've found that some videos will automatically get a copyright claim depending on the song that has been used within the video. It's fine as long as you don't monetize your video but due to your situation, I know you can't do that. Maybe send an email to your partnership and see what they say.

I have sent a message to my partnership before asking how I can avoid this problem, but they never responded back, even though they said if I had any questions/concerns to please let them know.
All of the music in the game is copyrighted. Those terms and conditions of that partnership are exceptionally restrictive considering how the content ID system works.
You can't avoid copyright in any way unless you obtain a (paid) license from each artist to use their songs without a problem. Even if you received matched third-party content notifications for those, you would be far from receiving a strike.

You can try playing the game with having the music off, but the sound effects and dilaogue speech on. I have seen a lot of youtube Let's play do this, including Geek Remix.

While I don't recommend it as I am sure it would be pricey, as for the demo vocal music found in various scenes in the game, you can get licenses to use the songs below:

https://www.audionetwork.com/

However, it only covers the demo music - the ones that are non-Indie music. As such, these are the ones not found on the Life Is Strange OST soundtrack.

The Life is Strange wikia has a listing of which ones are demos and which ones are actual indie songs. However, I don't think they cover all the demo songs found in chapter 5. I can do a search as I have bought those songs.

There isn't really any need though as while ContentID will prevent being able to monetize a video it doesn't actually take it down. ContentId is a consistent issue for anyone doing Let's Plays and a partnership deal which is entirely relying upon avoiding them is one which is very tenous and should be questioned.

That would probably take years of work on YouTube for me to reach the money I would need to get the licenses to use the songs, since so far my YouTube channel only earns 2 to 4 dollars a day and I only have over 960 subscribers. I won't be able to get the kind of money I need to get the licenses to use those songs in a long long time.

You don't need to get the licences you just have to deal with the fact that using copyrighted material will suffer the video being hit by ContentId.

As Doesnotcompute83 mentioned, the only sure way to avoid automatic strike is to play the game without music. It's a separate option in the audio menu. It's possible you'll be able to upload videos with the music on and not get struck down, but you're effectively rolling the die.

We as the game devs & publisher don't strike down any videos based on music, but the music licensing agencies do (as they're the ones who own them).

I don't know if this will help you but it's a link that has the artists and names of each song in case you want to look into each song individually and contact the publishers.

Life Is Stranmge Song/Artist Website Link: http://forums.eu.square-enix.com/showthread.php?t=153558

I had spoken to a lot of the music companies previously as I've done/am doing my own Life Is Strange Let's Play and discovered that most songs are fine to use within your videos as long as you don't edit them in during the editing process of your video, however, some of the larger artists/companies will claim the rights on their songs if they are in your video. Maybe check out the YouTube Music Policies section and search the songs in the link. It should have some details about the use of the songs within your videos. It may be time consuming but could allow you to leave the music on within some of your videos. I hope this helps. Good Luck.

I dont know how everyone else, but I get 7+ music copyright clames on every stream or video I make about Life is Strange...
Jeckenn Oct 21, 2017 @ 7:33am
Back when the game was still in production this question was presented on this forum and the devs did respond by saying that as long as you don't make money off of your Youtube account then don't worry about it at all, it is only if you make money off of your videos that it matters..
