From Emma Vieceli "Like so many players all over the world, I fell hard for Max and her story from the release of episode one, and every chapter brought more heartache, tears and emotional rollercoasters. One of the wonders of the series is that every player may have taken Max and Chloe on a unique journey, and so distilling their possible futures into one mini-series is a huge thing. Importantly, as with the game, it must always be remembered that what we’re creating here is one possibility out of many. I’m excited with the story we’ve opted for, and I hope readers will be too!”
This is from the LiS blog [lifeisstrange-blog.tumblr.com]
Long story short, if DontNod ever plans to make another game in say, 10 years or so xD, they could take a completely different direction.
Does this opinion cover Before the Storm as well?
I am a little worried that with SquareEnix now having given license to two different groups to tell their own stories with DONTNOD's characters and universe will make canon facts increasingly difficult to arrive at some sort of consensus on. Whatever one's opinion of BtS, it introduced a number of inconsistencies with the original game and the comic has the potential to be even worse in this regard as it will be dealing with Max's powers and the supernatural forces in this universe and not just the characters as BtS did.
I might end up having to separate LiS into DONTNOD's canon and then an Extended Universe semi-canon covering all third-party entries in the series.
'Worried' was just a choice of phrase, not my actual feelings. I don't actually feel anything beyond minor irritation for these decisions.
However, a fair bit of my ability to enjoy stories is from suspension of disbelief and things like the historical and character inaccuracies introduced by BtS certainly killed a lot of that for me.
DONTNOD doubtlessly have some underlying reasoning behind the supernatural elements of the LiS universe and Max's powers so the comics stand to conflict even more with this original vision than the prequel did.
That's not to say I'm not looking forward to the comics and seeing what comes next for Max and Chloe, but I'm certainly expecting that they're going to introduce more issues with the wider universe.
There's something to be said for too many cooks spoiling the broth, the more people SquareEnix allow to tell their own stories in this universe the more conflict we're going to see between these contrasting views. So while I'm happy for more LiS content I think the overall story would be better served if SquareEnix ensured that DONTNOD kept tighter control of the reins rather than giving carte blanche to others as they have been.
Well it's fanfiction with official license. Emma Vieceli has written the story without any cooperation with the original creators from Dontnod or Deck Nine. There were just a few people at Square Enix who took care that it doesn't go completely off the track.
That's exactly what SquareEnix did with Deck9 and BtS. No influence from the original team (aside from an unsourced story of some DONTNOD guys getting a single play test late in development after it was far too late to make any changes to the thing) and the only real limits on Deck9's creative vision being some of SquareEnix's own employees monitoring things.
Is BtS fanfiction then? 'Cos if not then your double standard is showing.

"So from the beginning, Dontnod hasn't collaborated with us, we haven't collaborated with them," Garriss told us.
"What Square wanted, in a partner on this, was they wanted the dev studio that they were gonna work with [and] if they chose to move forward, to have full creative control."

How involved are Dontnod and Square Enix in Before the Storm's development?
Obviously, the foundation that we're building on is what Dontnod established in the first game. And a lot of what we spend our time thinking about, worrying about, is, are we staying true to that original game? To the characters that are established there and the canon that has been established? But when it comes to the development of the story and the game and the gameplay itself, really to Square's credit, they've really said, "Deck Nine, you guys have to own this yourself." And I think because that worked so well for them with Dontnod, with the original game, they've proved for us to do our best work we really had to have ownership of it.
