Max's Diary (Chapter 5 Spoilers)
Little confused by this - why does Jefferson burn her diary in Ep 5? I started getting a bit lost in the sauce around this point.

It's implied/he states that he burned them because Max wasted her talent by destroying her photo entry. In the timeline where Max initially saved Chloe Max never enters her photo and Jefferson captures her anyway for investigating Rachel Amber. In the timeline where Max goes back and destroys her chances at getting to San Francisco she ends up 'still' captured by Jefferson at that same point in time because...?

How did Jefferson know she tore up her photo? We just assume that in this timeline before Max went to the bathroom she admitted to Jefferson she didn't have a photo/actually destroyed it? How does that change him leaving her alone for a week to outright wanting to capture her and burn her diary?

She ends up captured in the destroyed photo timeline, because everything went exactly like in the main timeline, the only diffrence was the photo. How did he know about it? We can speculate about it. Either she took the photo back into her diary, maybe she described it in her diary or simply said it after the class.

IIRC, she was trying to enter a photo where she was more conscious at the time. We didn't see this scene, but when she left her timeline, her diary was still fine.

But, I realized that sometimes her jumps change certain things. Unexpectedly, her diary was burned at an earlier time, in a different reality. Being sadistic as Jefferson is, he burned it. I don't know how to explain the reason he would have done it, but just that I know something changed earlier. It wasn't something that really bothered for me, as I came to accept it. I was disappointed, but at least Max stayed alive. Later, her diary is restored.

After Max uses a photo to change the past we always get a sequence of photos burning and being replaced by new photos. This is showing us the old timeline being replaced by the new timeline. it gives us hints to what the new timeline includes, information Max wont be privy to. In this case, after Max uses the contest photo and destroys it, one of the new images we are shown is Jefferson standing over Max in the Dark Room holding her Journal in one hand and the torn photo in the other. I think this is to show us that he found the photo in the Journal and out of rage then burned the Journal and all the other photos.

Max keeping the torn photo in her Journal fits her character as we can see she keeps a bunch of other photos in there along with other random stuff taped in. The question then is why did he not find it before? That would be because previously Max tore the photo in the girls' restroom and dropped it on the floor prior to Nathan entering. He then found the torn photo when Chloe pushed him to the ground and kept it (he mentions finding it when he confronts Max and Warren in the parking lot). So, by tearing the photo in her room instead of the toilets Max prevented Nathan getting hold of it and instead she still had it in her Journal when Jefferson gets his hands on it on Friday.

Jefferson actually intended to kill Max so burning her diary would be part of that because he would not want any evidence around, like her diary, for anyone to find and expose him as Max's killer.

I'd agree if burning her diary was a consistant act and not something that happens in one reality but not the other. It's likely he'd burn it eventually but I think the reason he burned it in front of her instead of leaving it until later is because of the photo and his anger at her wasting her talent (by his perception).

I dont think so because he didnt do it in the first timeline. I dont think he did it to cover his tracks. She had the torn in half photo in her notebook. Im guessing he found it in there and became enraged with her over wasting her talent and how good she could be. Like a father dissapointed in his child
