Why did Max end up back in that place? (spoilers)
In Episode 5 she goes back into her photo in the gallery then she says the only change she needs to make is to rip the photo, but then she ends up back in the dark room with Jefferson having got hold of her diary and burnt it. I don't understand why?

If the only change from the previous timeline was her ripping up her photo then wouldn't she have been in class, got David's number from the pamphlet, texted David about Jefferson then things would have proceeded the same as that previous timeline apart from Max winning the competition. What am I getting wrong?

LOL yh even I think so.
Because of the ripping, Jefferson burnt her diary, so she couldn't jump from the darkroom to class where she texted David.
No...because changing that one thing changes everything that comes after. I'll try to explain.

After ripping up the photo the Max that gets left behind keeps the ruined photo in her journal.

Jefferson sees it and gets angry at Max. In retaliation Jefferson burns Max's journal.

With out the journal and the photos contained within Max has no way of getting out of the dark room.

If Max can't get out of the dark room she can't get back to class and text David.

Also note that with out that one photo Max also won't win the contest and has no way of going back to stop herself from ripping up the photo.

It's also important to note that the reason David turns up and rescues you is because he works it out eventually. Max texting David simply accelerates the process and gets Jefferson arrested before he kidnaps her. Since you couldn't have texted him in this particular timeline you have to wait.

This.

Destroying her entry means that when she was captured by Jefferson, two significant things happened.

1) The first thing he did when Max woke up was to burn her Journal and all of her photos in front of her. This means it's impossible for her to photo travel from the dark room. She's never able to warn David.

2) She's trapped in the dark room for a longer period of time. Long enough at least for the storm to arrive.

In this timeline, David discovers the dark room on his own. It's implied he still received some help from Max and Chloe, although it seems more likely that in this timeline David discovered what Chloe and Max had been working on in Chloe's room than them having any direct contact.

We do know in this timeline Max and Chloe went to the EOTW party, as Warren still has the photo, and Max is finally able to travel back one more time to save Chloe.

I like to think that he finds the (still opened) map on Chloe's Laptop and the clues on the board in her room and comes to the same conclusion as Max and Chloe.

Yeah, me too. And the bog board with all the clues tapped to it.

He refers several times to how Max and Chloe worked together to figure it out, and how he wou;dn't have gotten there without them. We just never get the details. I agree with you, though.
