The web version didn't have Kindle, so things were a lot more relaxed.
I think the change has some serious downsides and have commented to the developer as such in another thread where he provided some explanation as to what he was trying out with this build.
I'm hoping that he will revert the changes.
The constant clicking is something Peter Molyneux has tried in Godus. And frankly, I hate it there. I'd hate to see it stick around here.
Does this work for Kindle? (I'm not in a place where I can test this at the moment.)
It does work.
I'm not sure either what kind of downside using kindle has. Not sure if I like it, I played on some other planets already and it seems like the AI uses it all the time. I can imagine that it would be alot more relaxing without kindling.
The developer says that Kindling units before the flag is up puts out weaker units. This may be true, but they are not 'worth it' stronger if you wait for the flag. From what I've seen, Kindling is ALWAYS better than waiting. Which stinks because it does seem to become a frantic click-fest :(
The kindle tool was actually introduced from requests in the community over the last year. Yes you can click and drag the kindle tool to save clicking, but it really doesn't need to turn into a clickfest, that's the last thing I'd want this to be! :p
I didn't find Reprisal "slow" per se. I thought the pacing was perfect. It was the primary reason I bought this here rather than continuing to play the free web version.
Mind you-- I'm not opposed to the feature being there, but the AI seems a little too able to (ab)use the Kindle power. This in turn forces use of it on the players end. This forced playstyle creates the undesirable gameplay experience.
If there is an AI setting to ratchet down the frequency of the AI using Kindle, that would probably be a good first tweak. If you could remove Kindle from the AI's action list during early levels and only add it back in at later levels, that would probably ramp difficulty a little more smoothly.
Whatever you do, I'd be happy to test it in an opt-in build and provide feedback. I don't know how difficult it is to set up multiple repositories and multiple builds, but just saying I'm willing.
I don't really have a problem with the mechanic, but I was not aware this is what I was *supposed* to be doing.
In fact, I couldn't complete the second level before I read this post; the tutorial suggests to me that I just need to flag my units for attack and build a bigger base with the terrain tool. I would recommend adjusting either the first or second level to make it much more obvious this is the intended way to play.
Same, I had to play the second level 4 or 5 times until I figured it out. I do agree that the clicking is a little excessive. Maybe only being able to kindle every 30 seconds instead of every 10 or so would slow things down a touch? Fun game though, enjoying it.
Slow is good.
So I decided to pick the game up since I really found myself enjoying the free version, and I can see where you're coming from here. The way you've configured it, though, makes it essential to keep pace with the AI opponents. If you wait for your populants to fill their buildings, you're dead. I tried focusing on land shaping before settling on the second island, to give them room to quickly spread out and, without doing much kindling, by the time the enemy decided to attack me, it was much too late to settle and overcome his assaults.
As such, you must shape the land and kindle your populants simultaneously, which then permits something similar to the free version's experience. Once you realize that's how you should do things, it's not too bad.
However...Kindling seems a bit finicky for clicking. It seems to be a click and hold move, maybe? Either way, instead of clicking all over, I simply opted to drag it around my buildings to kindle them to overcome that, which made it not feel nearly as frantic as this thread describes.
I think this is mostly a case of not emphasizing the utility of kindling enough, as it's a pretty chill game once you know to use it more, since it's basically sprogging 2.0.
Edit: My bad, I think it was more island 3 than two, but either way.
Thanks again for the comments. I'm going to do a quick update that balances island 2 ... as that does seem steep in ramping up!
I was hoping players would 'paint' around with the kindle tool much like raising and lower so that the clicking was reduced. I think the play style is different from the web version ... and from what was expected, I guess its finding the balance :D
If you are ultimately determined to keep Kindle then fast switching with right-click or holding ctrl or alt to Kindle should definitely be implemented.
