Well this just makes me look like a criminal... I let a 3 yr old play it.
I don't know how familiar you are with FNaF but the first game is very "clean" horror, with no swearing, no adult content and almost no gore. The "game over" screen contains a very cartoonish image of some eyeballs dangling from an animatronic costume, and the narrator, "Phone Guy" describes a few things that might scare young kids.
There is a darker story about the pizzeria being haunted by the spirits of murdered children, but it's really hidden deep within the game and most young kids probably wouldn't find it. (You have to find some newspaper articles hidden on a wall in the game, take a screenshot and enlarge it to read the hidden story.)
The sequels do contain some stronger content, such as a non-graphic murder of a child in 8-bit graphics and some images of a villain's corpse. I would recommend playing them yourself or watching gameplay videos before just handing them off to a younger child. But even then, the games provoked a great discussion with my kindergartener. He talked about how much he hated what the Purple Guy did to the kids, and how he was glad someone finally stopped him. And we talked about how there are real "bad guys" in this world as well as good guys who work to stop them, stranger danger, etc.
I played Five Night's at Freddy's 3 on a different account last year, and last year I was 10. The only thing that scared me was my first time seeing each of the animatronics and a couple times with Phantom BB. It's fine. Although, don't let him touch FNaF 4 until you glaze your windows or All-Nightmare mode might make him scream so loud it might break the glass.
I say yes. It's true that the games story has to do with murder, but there is no "killing" in this game. No blood, no violence. The creator "Scott Cawthon" is a christian and before made a lot of christian games. He recently tried horror with Five Nights at Freddy's and was really successful to the gaming community. This game is supposed to be scary and dark, but in his interview he said he wanted to make it for all ages thus the game not having blood, gore, violence of anykind. The only way the player loses is to a jump scare of the animaltronics. No killing animations just a jump scare with a tv blur at the end. Your only concern is if this game is to scary to give him nightmares. Nothing to worry about in a game like this.
Hope my answered helped you out!
