So, to answer your question in whole, yes it is playable with a gamepad, but just not a genuine experience.
The best recommendation I can give for external devices in conjunction with the game, would be a pen tablet like Wacom Intuos. Now THAT is a kick in the pants to play any Five Nights at Freddy's game with, and the closest you can get to "being in the game" so to speak.
I actually ended up using the Logitech gaming software. But I'm sure Joy2Key would work too. In fact I think that'd be more stable.
