Game crashes instantly SOLUTION
I was having trouble launching games 16-20 for years and finally figured it out.

Go to Documents and locate the folder for the game you want to work. Click on the folder and there should be configuration settings for that game.

Click on the configuration settings and find the game window (it will have different names depending on the game), and change the number from 0 to 2.

Exit and save the settings, and the game should now work.

Where are the configuration settings located? I open the folder for this game but don't see that. Please help me.

I found the configuration settings but am not sure which 0 to change to 2

Amazing, it worked for me! To clarify what to do, Documents > The Haunting of Castle Malloy > Castle Malloy > this opens notepad, change WindowMode = 0 to 2 > save the file > close and open the game!

This didn't work for me, my WindowMode was already set to 2. I tried changing it to 0, still crashes. Changed it back to 2, still crashes. Changed compatibility settings to XP and run as administrator, still crashes. It's weird, because I played this game 2 weeks ago for an hour straight with no issues. Now it crashes every couple minutes.

I've done everything the trouble shooting list tells you to, and tried to do what was suggested here. There is NO file for this game on my computer. I keep getting an 'access denied' popup when i launch it, and I've already unistalled it and installed it three times.

Same. Trying everything. Nothing is fixing it. No one is helping. Not searching on google. Not Steam. Not HER interactive. It is beyond infuriating.

I literally spent the last 5 hours trying to figure this out and i think i had the same problem as you, and mine works now! I cleaned all my drives and changed window mode 700x like everyone says to and i almost gave up. But i figured it out and it opens saves closes and opens again!
Here is what i did:
Delete the current install in your files first> empty the recycle bin> also uninstall via steam> then reinstall as you normally would in steam> go to the folder in your local files > open Directx folder in the castle malloy folder>run the "DXSETUP" application> click through wizard> go back to castle malloy folder> open config settings notepad file> change both the WindowMode from 0 to 2 AND change ExternalCifFileChecking from 1 to 0> save and close notepad>run the castle malloy game
Its so annoying that they dont just normally work, so i feel your pain lol I literally shouted for joy once it finally opened, so i hope it works for you too!

So I tried this with the files from steam and it didn't fix the issue. I finally gave up and purchased the game from her interactive directly because I figured it was something to do with the way the download was formatted by steam? When I downloaded the game from her interactive, it still would not play... until I changed the 0 to a 2 like it is mentioned above. I have no idea why this is an issue though. Good luck to everyone trying to figure this out. Very frustrating tbh.
I half followed one of the previous comments and it worked without all the rest of it. The Legend of the Crystal Skull kept crashing whenever I tried to call Professor Hotchkiss for the first time and AS SOON AS SHE PICKED UP, no more game. So, I went into Documents, changed the .ini file in two places, and it worked!

RunInWindowedMode=2 (in both spots)
ExternalCifFileChecking=0 (in both spots)

Hope that clarifies everything for anybody who didn't want to read a lot of instruction!
