So right now, I'm playing Law/Duels.
However, I prefer Chaos:)
To enjoy Chaos, you have to embrace the RNG (random number generator): if you've played XCOM (etc), you'll be just fine. If you can't tolerate two 90%-to-succeed events failing in a row, probably best to go with Law mode. Chaos mode is all about managing the risks the RNG brings to the game - there is *a lot* you can do to swing the odds, but some players just plain hate it.
I'd say law mode somewhat makes more sense in Realms, as it can be annoying to lose an NPC to a magic attack (no defense against those beyond the roll-to-succeed).
The two modes play quite differently.
IMO law mode is more mathsy, and chaos mode I can play more intuitively and quickly. More ups and downs in Chaos mode. more feels:)
Chaos is more fluid and intuitive, but based on RNG. It makes tension and extreme feelings (both good and bad).
Law is more deterministic and predictable, with no RNG. It's played more calmly, with less stress, but could make you feel bored (IMO).
^^^Is a pretty good 5-minute intro to "Chaos mode" battle. A couple of bits (and the graphics) are a little outdated, but it's still a great overview.
Law mode replaces %-to-cast with mana: you get, e.g., 15 mana per turn and "spend" it to cast spells (so a hydra will "cost" more than a goblin); it also replaces combat %-to-kill with 100 hitpoints: each hit deducts hitpoints based on the attackers attack strength vs defenders defense-strength. One-shot-kills are rare in law (think: dragon vs rat). Law mode is otherwise the same, I think (but obvi plays very differently).
However, with Law Mode here, I've been playing that too, certainly a lot more because of Duels.
I hate Law Mode.. it's many other games. I have a law mode game on my phone. Units have different value than in Chaos. Ranged becomes strong. Always hits! Magic Bolts often don't one-shot. I feel like there is nothing to come from behind with in Law Mode. Once a player establishes an advantage the game is predictable.
Out of curiosity, what mobile game do you have on your phone that your comparing to law mode? Because I personally would give that game a look :-)
The risk management inherent within that game mode makes it infinately replayable, every match plays differently. HP based games are just meh, CR is fine enough that way I guess, but it doesn't match up to the Chaos version imho and I just find that equippment leads to matches that can be very samey so I avoid those too.
When I play through the single player campaign i intend to choose Law mode again. If i get the urge to replay the campaign, then i might switch to Chaos mode instead to add to the replayability of what might otherwise be too similiar an experience. I might, i might not.
Bottom line, its GREAT that the devs have provided a CHOICE. Whichever you choose, i'm not seeing a down side to either.
Yup exactly this. I stopped playing a while back and only recently started it up again. I'll be playing exclusively in law mode going forward.
