Tengen?
Despite being a bootleg, Tengen's Tetris on NES was the best Tetris. Is that included in here by some magical process? Instant buy if it is.

Tengen Tetris isn't a "bootleg". That word has more to do with quality more than legality. See, if you want to call something like NES Shinobi a bootleg, you're free to do so...

Most of Tengen's NES releases were either already were or ended up being legally sold in Japan anyway. Also, Tengen Tetris itself was legally sold for a period of time regardless.

It's definitely not the best Tetris at all, not even a particularly top tier game. People just say they like it because it has a versus mode, which they absolutely would not play if it was in this collection.

Bootleg is officially defined under legality, it's counterfeit, quality has nothing to do with it.

Seems there is confusion even here in the forums about what role the Tengen version plays in Tetris history. That will be addressed in our interactive documentary timelines.

Did you manage to secure rights to it?

We are allowed to discuss the release and its impact on the history of the franchise due to fair use, but we do not have permission to include the Tengen NES or Atari arcade versions of Tetris as playable.

This is one of the many difficult realities of game preservation.

Was it because the lawsuit condemned the Tengen version, or because whoever bought out the rights to Tengen/Atari wasn't willing to license?

Were you required to portray the Tengen version as an illegal bootleg?

By the way, as a heads-up, your account is showing as numbers because you have a limited account: https://help.steampowered.com/en/faqs/view/71D3-35C2-AD96-AA3A

The context of the Tengen version will be clear when people actually experience Tetris Forever for themselves. We're a week away.
