No Arika Tetris No Buy
holding out desperately for some sort of TGM rep to be included as part of tetris forever's celebration of legacy.

What about CD-i Tetris?

I will buy though. But it would be great for it to be more complete.

This project is a history of Tetris, told by the people who lived it. The games included are illustrations of that history. This is consistent with our other Gold Master Series releases, as well as Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration. We're telling a story, but letting you play it as it's told.

That said, everybody has a favorite version of Tetris. There are dozens if not hundreds of variants and releases. It is impossible for us to deliver every Tetris game made, and it was not our goal. It does not make your favorite game any less awesome.

In addition to our narrative focus, every project has a scope. We feel we're offering a good variety of games that are both historically important and still fun to play, plus some new stuff.

So I'm bummed to hear you're out because of what we don't have, rather than curious by what we do. But thank you for the consideration, at least.

I believe the Arika arcade games are available on Nintendo Switch.

I believe he was trolling, devs.

I doubt it. Arika Tetris > All.

I specifically was hoping these versions would be included as well. I'll probably still buy this but I fail to see how the most popular arcade version of Tetris in Japan plays no role in the history of Tetris. Quite a lot of people outside of Asia aren't aware that these games even exist and it would serve them well for you introduce them to it.

No, I believe he actually likes Tetris.

I thought this was going to be a comprehensive collection but it's just an A&E style doc with some roms. Not even an online leaderboard for each game I bet.

I need TGM for Steam Deck

Well I can't wait! I've become a massive Tetris fan since getting my Switch. Really looking forward to playing all of these, especially Tetris Gaiden and Super Tetris 3!

Can you confirm if the other games featured are completely different games or are they the existing games on different platforms?

Hope there's a few from publishers other than Blue Planet Software... always wanted to try Tetris Plus (Jaleco) as heard good things about it in the Tetris community.

PS: Only Tetris Grandmaster 1 and 2 are available on the Switch, not number 3 which is the one everyone's craving as it's one of the best Tetris games of all time

The (full) list of games hasn't been revealed yet. It's focused on older titles. (I wouldn't count on including the Sega and Nintendo versions, or extra licensing like that Mickey Mouse one)

Unwishlisted.

That's about half correct; while Arika's TGM series has enjoyed a reasonable level of success, it is a descendant of the true king of Japanese Tetris: Sega's 1988 arcade version. While TGM series games were placing in Top 25 arcade monthly revenue charts around the times their releases, Sega's arcade classic -- then a decade past release -- was surprisingly still placing in the annual earners charts.

I do agree that it would be nice to have representation from the Japanese arcade versions, I imagine would be quite complicated to negotiate so I can kind of understand if this collection trends more towards titles developed/published by Bullet-Proof Software. Arika has already sub-licensed TGM1 and TGM2 to Hamster for the Arcades Archives releases on Switch and PS4. Jaleco's Tetris Plus 2 has appeared on an AtGames plug 'n' play console. Capcom's Magical Tetris Challenge is likely a licensing nightmare due to the inclusion of Disney characters. Sega's arcade Tetris and spinoffs may not have the same sort of outside contract considerations, but it's still one more company to negotiate with (although it would be nice to have a newly accessible port aside from tracking down a Genesis Mini or the Japanese PS2 Sega Ages collection). While I would love to be pleasantly surprised on any of these points, it does seem altogether unlikely.

I appreciate the detailed writeup/history lesson!
