Question about firing primary weapon

I just started playing this game and I have a problem... Every time I fire my primary weapon the laser bullets dont go far, they dont fly straight, they usually hit the ground, like it's a low range weapon. But when I see opponents firing their bullets, they bullets fly straight and far, why is that?

Yeah I never figured that out, I always just tried to use the primary weapon only on straightaways when the opponents were directly in front of me.
