How do I jump high?

I am having difficulty getting past two points in the game so far. I in one I have to swim past these moving UFO things and get to an orb, but I can't seem to jump high enough to get to the orb. In the next level I have to jump over these mines to get through the level, but then I come upon 3 mines in a row and there is no way to jump all the way over these mines. I tried jumping to the ceiling above me but I can't seem to jump high enough.
