do any cheats exist?
i have been digging around for a little bit to try and find something to make the singel player a little more possible and all i can find are useless achevement lists.
i love this game and want to play it some more but outside 1 or 2 maps it is near impossible to hold off the first tank wave with the starting credits it guives 1 player alone. and on the maps it forces everything down the same rautes it either ends too quick to actually try out any of the fun toys or constricts your turret placement to a point that only 1 setup can be used(solo) and they have to be babied so you cant actually do anything else.
heck even an endless mode cheat would be nice.

Usually you want to be buying the rocket launcher first and getting a decent MG turret covering multiple lanes or to cover a corner (usually with a supply station in front to eat rockets and to heal bots reparing the turret, still try to repair the turret yourself). Then you upgrade that turret and you up your damage so you can kill basic spider tanks in 2-4 shots and place supply depots near where you're attacking (and as shields for turrets against rocket guys). Turret positioning depends on the map.

The Rocket Launcher (kills tanks and crowds and specials, gets bots unstuck), SMG (kills infantry) are really the only two guns worth buying early on (rocket launcher first, always). Damage upgrades are very good, 2 is enough and everything past that is overkill or a safety net to make life easier when fighting boss spider tanks, then you get respawn timer and speed (go in for a suicide mission, kill/damage tanks way in the rear and die). Extra health and regen for later (both are optional, but useful).

Also learn to bunny hop: Jump when you hit the ground. You keep momentum and keep gaining speed making you faster.

I think the game was made with the quake 3 engine, you can use quake 3 cheats for this game this might be useful: https://www.gamespot.com/quake-iii-arena-1999/cheats/
I tried "/god" it didn't work
"/give all" made the movement speed slow for some reason
just keep experimenting with the GameSpot link above

Looks like the devs might not have wanted people to be able to cheat and so maybe messed with the codes(?)

Too difficult in what mode? I don't find it so difficult that cheats would be necessary. Did you read the ingame help and the manual (available from the game's steam page)? The game is a bit exotic in its mechanics, maybe you are not using all the tools available to you (especially upgrades and defense towers and their upgradeability).
