King's Bounty: Armored Princess

Constantly running back for more troops...
Recently bought King's Bounty: Unarmoured Princess by recommendation from a friend. Good game, reminds me a lot of HOMM3 minus all the kingdom management.

One problem I seem to have though is I'm probably really bad and have to keep going back for more troops after every fight with anything that is not "weak" or less. This is quite a problem since some islands don't even have the troops I use. For example the second island doesn't have any archers.

I know you can have reserves, but there are only two slots for reserves whereas you can have 5 troops in the army, so you can't even bring a reserve for all your troops. And then what happens you buy out all the troops from a castle? I got to 0 with swordsmen and it doesn't seem like they ever respawn again?

Anyone have some tips?

You get additional units to recruit once you finish the missions from that castle.
First of all, once you are in a battle, press ALT. This way you will see how much can an enemy unit move when you mouse-over it and when it's turn will be.
All King's Bounty games have this problem, but there are multiple ways of dealing with this: use inquisitors and resurrection spell (paladin starts with an scroll of resurrection and order magic is easy to access); play as necromancer; use a horde of cheap level 1 units as tanks (which can be ressurected very easy); use phoenix and phantom spells. And of course, you always have to use units from the area you are currently in (especially if you play at a high difficulty) and that's the thing I like most about King's Bounty - due to this, the atmosphere always changes.

PS: You can also simply lower the difficulty. The AI is the same, but the unit stats are altered (you'll lose less troops, which means that you'll run less to replenish them).

In addtion to what he said your reserves should be two types that you lose the most often in battle. Example I use devilfish to get in early and bite the hell out the enemy. They die rather quickly but are very cheap to replace (since your reserve is unlimited sized you can stock as much as you want but do keep some money for items other troops etc). Next I use guardsmen or swordsmen. They are my heavy hitters and used to keep the devilfish being out flanked to death and to help the devilfish flank the enemy in return. In this game it is about knowning your enemies stats and overwhelming the defense of tough units with multiple flanks. My other units are a summon unit of Royal Griffins (they expensive but worth it for the free Griffins they summon) but dont send them in to early in game unless you facing an all shooter army. I keep set of Paladins as demon crushers and support free moves for devilfish and swordsmen. They also rezz the whole army near the end of the match. Inquistors I use for ranges support, free rage with bless at h igher levels, and rezz again. By using similar combo say peasant etc in the early game and learning to teach your dragon treasure hunting during the match it gets easier to replace losses. Hope this helps somewhat with suggestions and ideas on play styles.

When I refer to flanking its like this. During the round most enemies and friendlys can only retaliate once from the first attack. So I send the devilfish first. They hit get tore to pieces then the swordsmen come in to a side hex and hit the same enemy. If the enemy does not have endless retaliation ablity of some kind they cannot respond to the swordsmen hit them ultra hard with their abilty swing. Then as the lines bog down in come the paladin and griffins to finish stack fights.
