The developers are selling childrens conversations and empowering AI censorship
Innersloth are employing an AI model called Toxmod to babysit every game lobby and sharing the voice clips of anyone speaking on the microphone with third parties. Their intention is to ensure that if any player uses the wrong tone of voice, that they can permaban them without any human oversight, or any human making a complaint.

Despite this being a recreational product, players will have less agency to express themselves than in the average school yard to the stuffiest workplace gathering. Among Us 3D is a social deduction game with the social deducted. The real deduction is an AI trained with the bias that any player who makes innocuous comments that could offend the most socially insulated 40 year old in the lobby is "toxic", and to be culled from participation in any capacity, even from playing the game with like-minded people not traumatised by the passing breeze. The developers would like you to pay money for this experience.

Don't believe me? Read all about it on Toxmod's website: https://www.modulate.ai/toxmod/gaming

"ToxMod’s powerful toxicity analysis assesses the tone, timbre, emotion, and context of a conversation to determine the type and severity of toxic behavior."

When these AI models are effectively trained using the conversations of iPad kids discarded to amogus purgatory by their millennial single mothers, these third party companies will sell their honed AI tools to less closeted authoritarians than the developers so they can stifle the expression of any ideas and viewpoints that they don't like.

In the short term however, they will only use AI to ensure that games aren't as entertaining as they were 15 years ago, back before the two most social games Halo and Call of Duty were so radically moderated that now every lobby is socially disengaged and silent. Call of Duty uses Toxmod.

If you value the period in recent history where you could play games for fun and enjoy banter with strangers, you should refuse to support games like this with your money.

i mean, if you use a windows PC they have been recording your voice for years. if you own an iphone or android they have been secretly recording your calls for years. this really is nothing new honestly.
yep, just found out that I got banned "over something I said in the voice chat" (until April) after playing for like 30 minutes without even arguing with anyone at ALL, like, I can't imagine anybody at ALL could report me. I was even leaving when people were asking me to leave because I don't speak their language, I wasn't forcing them speak English like so many do.

first thought that I had — ai moderation, and I guess I was right :D

could've never thought the future would be like this

oh yeah and also it's not just a voice chat mute for example, it's a full game ban, I need to make a new account to play I guess. I won't though because I don't want to be making accounts over and over and over again, I don't think I will ever be able to master the tone, timbre, emotion which won't get me banned anymore.

oh and also the game itself is a DIRECT port of the VR game, with all problems that that version has, and with all unfixed problems that this peculiar method of making a game brings. 60+fps (I have 180) makes the screen jitter and blur a lot, if I disable v-sync I get 800 fps and my sensitivity becomes REALLY low, changing FOV makes you have two right hands, etc etc. so yeah the game itself is bad anyway so who cares

Unfortunately the world has and will always contain inadequate, sad, diminutive people who want to censor the expression of others. The only thing that has changed is the means by which they will try to establish control and authority.

But you can make a choice to not support these products and ensure a market for developers who promote their games in the future as experiences free from AI overreach.

yeah I guess I won't buy this game when it comes out, I don't want to waste money on a game where I have a risk to permanently be banned (without actually earning the ban I mean, by cheating or by intentionally keeping making people mad), and not even for a cheating false-positive

regarding what I thought of the future — well, I guess I am an optimist after all, despite considering myself a pessimist/realist mostly xD

damn after reading through this post i'm shocked. what a joke. i'll NEVER use/enable voice in this game... hope enough people are willing to play without voice and with the text chat because the game is great but you'll never get even a fraction of a second of my voice @devs.. never ever (same goes for all other games as i've never used voice chat in any game due to my concerns of what happens with my voice, especially nowadays where the AI can recreate the voice of everyone... i would have to be dumb to give my voice out to the people so ai's can fake my voice within seconds and do whatever they want to do with it (there are tons of possibilities to use someones voice to their disadvantage)

edit: also thanks for this thread, its worth more than gold. no one in their right mind should use voice chat in this game or any other these days

just a little clarification — there is no text chat :) the text chat icon opens a "quick chat", you can only use pre-set phrases, you cannot type anything.

it's not like that in normal Among Us though as far as I know…

this game in particular was made by Schell Games

I want to believe that Innersloth haven't fallen so low

Who is publishing it? It's also being developed by two studios.

To clarify, it says right on their page that Innersloth is publishing it, and that Innersloth and Schell are developing it. Screw them both I guess then.

It also means that in a private lobby with only friends people can get banned for stupid crap like wrong tone.

BattleBit Remastered enabled this crap and within a few days the playerbase cratered. When playing CoD no one talks anymore either.

oh that's why everybody stopped talking at some point… I didn't even know, I just usually don't start talking myself, only in response to somebody

I stopped playing at that point too by the way

40000 players to 500… sad

Just gonna touch on one thing:

"selling children's conversations" if you put in an age under 16 (I think that's the number,) your IP is banned because you wouldn't be eligible.

Obviously, people can lie, but the precaution is there. Also I thankfully haven't seen any toddlers playing this... YET.

I have, well, voices were like 5-6 years old

The main audience of this game is pretty much of that age after all

Also I played Among Us VR (this same game but in VR, it came before) and like ALL lobbies were filled with maybe 8 year olds, there were usually 2-3 players of an older age, including me, and the rest were children (like 8 people) and they were just screaming and constantly pushing the emergency vote button and yelling KICK BLUE, KICK YELLOW, KICK RED randomly, etc, well, in other words — were just having fun that way instead of playing the game how it's intended I guess. (I'm in no way against that by the way, they're children and just haven't lived for so long so things like this are still not boring to them)

Man. Shame, but also seems like something that was destined to happen, so whatever.

Actually, now that I think about it, since this version doesn't need a VR headset, it's even more likely to have kids play it, huh? Oh well...
