I used to think duelist was great, but it's kind of niche given most fights are not 1v1, which causes it to lose it's effectiveness.
Add that onto a character with a Fighter + Defender / Two-Handed build, and you've got a good 2v2 team for DPS and survivability.
For 3v3, toss in a Marksman+Ranger for the added damage so long as your commander can pull threat.
Then to finish any other class fits well into the mix, but having another healer / survivor / dps never hurts for 4v4
Two-Handed Human Beefwall smashes enemies in the face while Elven/Human Ranged support rains death on the enemy and kites them around in a deadly game of keepaway until the Beefwall is done with the idiot who was dumb enough to stand toe-to-toe with him and comes up on them from behind
I tend to have Shieldbro face tank the most dangerous opponent and have three others that are good at 1v1 take out the lesser enemies, then gang up on the last man standing. I also use Shieldbro for Tag Team matches, and bring only him. He 1v1s the entire lineup, and goes home with 91% health.
I'm still exploring other alternatives for Gladiators and their builds. But my Home Made Glads are all about 400 Combat Power or more. I think there is room to refine them further.
Sword dancer: She's a Counter Tank/DPS with a Block 95% rating, and 71 dodge. Primarily a Duelist with splashes of Commander for self healing, Fighter for the Kick for CC, and Rogue for the +Crit% for a Crit rate of 46%. Any attack she sends out is a 1 in 2 chance of Crit. Any attack she receives is going to be blocked and have a 25% counter rate. The longer the battle goes, the more bonus damage she gets from Expose Weakness up to 68% bonus damage. And a Cutlass for Damage Pen, and +Block and Dodge. It took a WHILE to get her there, but she's a very formidable Gladiator.
These two are basically the core of my lineup. I also have a Dual Wield Cutlass user I send to chase down and kill back liners like archers or other squishies, then back stab tanked opponents. And a Polearms focused around Crit to just smash enemies to bits with large swing and unblockable abilities. I'm probably going to update the Polearm one to be Heavy Armor since using 1 weapon opens the way for more than Medium Armor. As she is, she's still too squishy. These have been my Core 4.
The duelist has a skill that increases blockrate and gives you counterattack. That's extremely powerful with a shield centered build.
So, I love Bardiche. It is both polearm and two handed, which means it has added accuracy passive of a polearm and added stamina damage of a two handed. Fighter's kick will be good to keep the enemy far a way along the polearm's own disables and you can confidently hit them when they are still on the ground.
Then, Figher's AoE attack should have extended range because again --- you have a polearm. Then, there is a rogue skill that decreases blockrate.
Lastly, toss in a commander, ideally one who is also a ranger or marksman. Assuming that his passive works, he can increase accuracy of all other characters. So you will basically always hit, always deal more damage to stamina and cycling through stuns, you rarely take much damage.
If there is a ranged enemy, you want to kill them first though.
Lastly, there is a weapon which I think is called Bastard Sword and is both one handed and two handed. I think it may have a similar strength like the Bardiche has, but haven't tested it much out yet.
Maybe to a range build?
I don't think so, at least if you are a ranger, you get advantage from using it from up close.
I think any gladiator with sufficient weight limits can equip a special purpose weapon.
Flails have advantage against shields, but but don't benefit against anything else, so theoretically you can equip a flail for the purpose of fighting shielded opponents.
Using similar logic, you can think about different polearms when they make most sense and so on. But I don't see this feature as particularly good.
