The "Indian Dealer" achievement actually references a racist phrase

I just saw that there is an achievement called "Indian Dealer"... Sadly, this is actually racist...

It's obviously a spin off of the old, archaic phrase "Indian Giver" which itself is a racist phrase based off of... well, racist ideology. It is based upon the rather incoherent belief that the Native American people 'tried to take back what they gave away' in terms of the land which now encompasses the US, Canada, Mexico, etc., which is clearly just absurd and blatantly racist in every conceivable way possible if you actually think about it.

Sadly it was often the US government (among many) who usually tried to, or succeeded in, taking back what they had given to or traded to the Native tribes. This was even established in numerous court-cases over long periods of time, consistently favoring the tribes. This was due to many treaties that the US government broke against practically every tribe they had established treaties with, with practically every treaty written...
So perhaps the achievement should be something like... 'Like the Government', at least that would be far, far more accurate.

In any case, despite how common this phrase might have been in the past, there is clearly no need to use the phrase or refer to racist ideology like this in 2025. So it should be rewritten / rephrased.

I'm sure the dev didn't intend for this, as I know the phrase has been around for quite a long time and most people aware of it don't even think about the connotations. So I'm hoping TVGS will change the title of this achievement, as it is rather offensive to Native Americans.

I know it's not exactly a 'bug' with the game itself, but I'm listing it here in 'Bug Reports' as that seems like the most accurate place to report this problem to the developer.


And just to add, No, this isn't a meme or joke topic. It is actually rather sad I feel I even have to say something like this, but I don't want this to be misconstrued as some troll post...

This is a bug report forum for the game and none of you are the dev for this game. So why are you even replying?
This is not a regular forum to be telling everyone you're racists. That is not even something that needs to be said, it's pretty obvious when people like you talk.

It is a problem related to the game. That is essentially the definition of a 'bug'. And this is the most relevant place to post the issue for the dev to see.

An achievement they purposefully made, with a clear way to get it, is not a bug. So no, it is not a "problem" related to the game. Go post this ♥♥♥♥ on reddit. not here on a BUG forum. LUL damn dude.

I'm with you on the achievement name being a problem, I saw it this morning and it immediately threw me off. I know "DEI" is uncool these days, but it really is a pretty racist term and should probably be renamed.

That said, this post probably shouldn't have been put in the Bug Forum. I get where you are coming from, but it could have equally gotten attention in Suggestions/Ideas.

I thought about putting it in Suggestions but it's not really a 'suggestion' either, though. At least not in my mind... If it were me and I did something like that I would fix it as soon as I could. As in exactly like 'bugs' and whatever other problems might come up with the game.
So either way there is no section really made for something like this.

I put it in the Bug report section because I'm assuming that the dev didn't actually know the racist connotations of the phrase and it was 'an unintended problem that occurred during development', which is the very definition of a 'bug'. So I still think this section fits the best, even if achievements are not necessarily part of the software itself. It is still part of the game here on Steam and was created by the dev.

Of course all of that is assuming he didn't know that it was racist. It may very well turn out that he did. *shrug* But I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt, as I do with all people who haven't shown any clear signs of bigotry or etc.

Either way it's already here and doesn't really matter. I posted this long before the vast majority knew about it or were talking about it and clearly the Dev has very likely heard about the issue now at this point, with as many people talking about it as there are and even news outlets reporting on it.

So he will just have to make a decision now, he either wants to be racist or he doesn't, and the whole world will know from that decision. Hopefully he makes the right choice.

My native american spouse actually found this funny. I'm not sure a drug dealing game is the game to nit pick things like that. For me if i don't find something funny I just scroll on. I'm not trying to be mean in any way, but it would be nice to see people lighten up some :) just my thoughts
