Broken game?

Maybe I'm not getting something, but after buying the initial three things from Dan's Hardware store (which, itself, didn't seem to work right - I couldn't enter the store until I went over to the bar across the street and punched Dan, at which point he went over and opened his store), I placed the grow tent and then filled the bucket with soil. However it wouldn't let me water, saying I needed to put the soil in first, which I already did. So I had no soil in my inventory any more. What am I supposed to do here?
