skateboard momentum is separate from walking momentum. you can see this if you use the superjump glitch and use the skateboard in the air: your upward momentum stops and you begin falling, but if you were to get off your skateboard, you continue flying up.
to preserve as much momentum as possible, jump up and get on your skateboard (we sk8rs call that a caveman). the fall from the jump height will preserve, if not give you a little, momentum when you touch the ground.
this might also be affected by your skateboard choice, as each skateboard has a different acceleration/cap. the golden skateboard, for $1500, is absolutely worth it.
I hated the skateboard at first. But after a few gaming sessions I was able to figure out how to so the transition and how EARLY i needed to JUMP to avoid curbs and obstacles.
I was one of these players that wanted to complain "ah this feature sucks or is broken" then I put the time in and learned I was just doing it wrong. That's a lessen that I think a lot of people here need to learn. The mechanics and limitation in the game are there for a REASON. learning how to OVERCOME them is part of the challenge.
