the lawsuit
If the game only sold 20 copies no one would care. But my guy knocked it out of the ballpark with monster sales and mucho buzz. Now there's the potential of having everyone with a grievance or simply looking for clout come after him with pitchforks and torches, from big corporations like Coca-Cola, to the perpetually offended, not to mention the existing trouble the dev is already experiencing with a certain aggrieved game studio.
I wish him luck.
Absolutely! Whether a dev expects to sell two copies of a game or two million they should always err on the side of caution when it comes to copyrighted materials in their game. They should be especially cautious if the content of their game is deemed controversial in any way, as a game about drug manufacturing and selling assuredly is. Even obvious parody might be fair game for legal action if the copyrighted materials are reproduced a bit too closely or blatantly for the copyright holder's (especially a big corporate entity) liking.
Honest to god I didn’t actually read all that, but my thing is… how is Coca Cola of all brands gonna be upset about that? Didn’t their original recipe have Cocaine in it?! Or am I tripping?
You're not tripping. When the recipe for Coca-Cola was first created in 1886 in a guy's backyard (go figure) it did indeed contain Cocaine from fresh Coca leaves. This was because back then it was being used as a legal pharma drug..and Coca-Cola was originally marketed as a pharma drug. The company stopped using fresh Coca leaves in 1906 due to public health concerns over Cocaine, and switched to using an extract from the leaves after they have been de-cocainized.
They continue to use a de-cocainized extract of Coca leaves to flavor Coca-Cola to this day. This extract is created by Stepan Chemical Co. in Maywood, New Jersey
