I have been working and grinding getting trashbags for the recyclers for the achievement, but a friend told me that they have been just doing trash pieces and not whole bags and got the achievement.

My question is can i get this achievement either way? Whether 500 individual pieces of trash or 500 trash bags?

Pro tip: I've only ever bought one stack of bags in my game(s) (had to restart a few times). I got the achievement off loose trash. I've only had to use trash bags when I had to manually empty an npc's trash cans so I could move them.

Trash bags count as 1 item. Do you want to throw away 500 empty cuke cans, or 500 trash bags you've collected 5000 items into?

Both work, one is just more work.

I throw trash bags into the ocean. Is there an achievement level for that?

Um... no. But you can still feel accomplished about it.

Trashbags seem like a waste of time tbh. The grabber is much faster and more convenient to use, granted they take up more slots so they are more useful once you move past the sweatshop.

The fastest way to get the achievement certainly is to have a dedicated trash van you fill with grabbers, pause your cleaners and then clean up after your botanists and chemists who litter like crazy until all trash grabbers in the van are filled up and then you dump all of them at once at a recycling station.
