BOTANIST is causing the lag spikes / stutters!
I tried so many things before just firing my growers... tried clearing the trash, verifying game files, disabling overlay, etc, etc. The one thing that fixed it was firing both botanists i had. After that, the performance went back to buttery smooth. So... has anybody figured out a way to fix this? lol

Report it to the dev as a bug and let him fix it.
How could anyone else fix it? At least not without a mod, that is...

Generally in these type games if a handful of workers are causing that kind of lag it's a pathing issue. Maybe take a look at the area the botanists work in and make sure there's an easy path in/out. If one worker is in a nook and another is blocking the exit, but also wants to go behind the worker in the nook; maybe that's not well optimized.
I haven't run into any issues with employees causing lag. I'm not saying they don't. I do run an auto-clear trash mod and an employee manager app mod. Clock mod as well so I don't have to open up the phone while running. Smooth sailing so far. Handler employees have exhibited odd issues due to inventory bug. Chemists also seem to hang up in confined spaces if you space max stations.

That's awesome you haven't had the problems. But for people who get the jittery stuff going on, firing and rehiring the botanists has fixed it for me every time.

As soon as the jitter happens, just fire and rehire and it should be good.

Noooo I'm asking if anybody has worked on the game besides the dev, and if those random people are releasing an update to the game. /S

Yes. Obviously I'm talking about a mod. Why even comment, my dude.
Removing soil dispensers and sprinklers from pots that had botanists assigned to them reduced the stutters greatly for me.

DUDE THIS SEEMS TO BE IT! I just had that same experience!! It was jittering while botanist was just chilling there... As soon as I fixed that and gave him something to do, the jitter went away!

Yes. Botanists lag when they have no work.
Botanists have a lot of things to check through to see if there's work to be done, and if 8 botanists are iterating through everything they could be needing to do at the same time every 3 seconds, it stutters. Soon as you unstuck them, lag stops. They will get stuck because no seed/no space in output.

Every idle employees will cause this, the more tasks they have, the worst it will get, botanists just happen to be the ones with the most tasks :P

I suspect removing money from their briefcase will stop them from iterating, since it won't pass that "I got paid" check.

Just a heads up, this is the number one thing being fixed right now. Th last patch release explains that this is what he will work on for the next patch release if he figures it out.
I hope that this helps for those wondering if it will ever be fixed or not.
