Probably. But It was just too tedious before it got fun. And if you suffer any setbacks early on, it's really significant.
I'd be curious to see, if a player knows what he is doing, what is the minimum number of plants you really need to water manually.
If I had to guess, 10? 12? 15 at the very most? Maybe less than 10?
If you are going to complain about that, then the game is really not for you.
EDIT: Starting from scratch, I manually watered 4 plants before buying sprinklers, then 4 more plants before buying soil distributors. That's what? Doing the watering minigame for the time equivalent of typing 2 replies in this thread? Which does not look like a problem for you.
This game is as slow a pace as you want it to be. So you need to just learn how to sit back, chill and just enjoy it.
