Can't say it 100% but at least the animation shows the botanist using a watering can, even when a sprinkler is next to the pot. So unless the fact that there is a sprinkler saves time on their watering action (wich I cant really verify), I guess sprinklers are useless on NPC-operated planters
I think you just save money and space by not adding sprinkler and soil distributor to the pots that are worked by your botanists. I tried that and it looked like they did not care, they are just as fast with or without them.

nah you dont need a sprinkler they automatically have a water can in their inventory thats infinite same with snippers too, so you dont need to have those sprinkles bascially a waste of space if you have employees on them.
if you get to 4am tho and wanna supplement your employees work though, it can be helpful for yourself to have those things. Like, if you need to make a big amount of product for the following day, you can fill the pots w soil, drop seed, and water them, then go to sleep. Your plants will grow, and the botanist will finish up w the nutrients the following day, you can jump start your progress that way.

It's a lot easier to never need to worry about a watering can yourself and the dirt filling goes faster. A botanist can really only handle like 4 plants anyways so I put those things in there for the sake of convenience as long as I'm not hurting for space.
