is there a way open/manage your inventory? or even drop stuff? i keep having to sort everything at a storage shelf.

there is no inventory, backpacks are planned though

If you open your phone you can move things around. If you want to get rid of an object with your phone open there is a red slot on the bottom right where you can dispose of items.

the item bar is the inventory. you can access it either by opening the phone, or by interacting with a storage object (like a shelf), as already mentioned.

as for dropping items, i dont think so.
if you want to get rid of items you can drag them to the red "discard" slot in the lower right of the inventory screen.

if you want to get items out of your inventory temporary, either for logistical reasons, to give them to another player, or to get illegal items out of your inventory, you can use any dead drop box as well if no shelves are nearby.

a backpack would be great, another thing i'd like to see is a central deposit point for your workers pay rather than a box for every bed

I’m on steam deck but for the life of me I can’t figure out how to pick up an item off the ground and add it to my inventory. I accidentally dropped a bag of soil and can’t add it to my bar.

are you sure it is an actual bag and not an empty one?
the only time i have seen bags of soil on the ground are when you have emptied them and they turn into a trash item.

this just happened to me i opened the bag and wanted to pause real quick so i pressed esc and it dropped the bag.
