Yes there are multiple types of military units and you can research tech that allows you to build them, but you can also buy them on the markets. The military is split into armies and you can manually move them or command them to attack a target or you can toggle an automated mode if you don't want to manually control them.

I will simply add that I will be doing livestreams of the game on Steam through the fest at different times, and when I'm worn out, will have a video that gives some general economics information.
