Since this was the attempt at an ongoing version, jumping from the yearly releases (including the mess that Magic 2015 was), I hope that it was a big learning point from them. I am very curious about Magic Digital Next and hope (cautiously so) that it is an improvement and expansion on the prior games, and not a simple cut and paste.
Free to play games money spent is always a risk. And by the nature of the model, if they made it too comfortable to earn content free then no money is to be made. It is a tricky balance.
In any case, I say check the annoucement in Septemeber and see if Magic Digital Next does step up where it needs to or not.
P.S. Yes I want them to fix the bug in the old ones saving 2 less decks then you have total in the game. I still play them now and then because I love the theme decks.
They'll never ship that ♥♥♥♥.
MTGO is fun, but a bit painful to look at with the very old grainy graphics. Since Magic Digital Next is soundling like an umbrella sitaution for all digital products, it might include an update to MTGO as well.
In about 3 months we will have official info. It better be very informative and not simply a "teaser".
#1, and most likely: budget issues. The game wasn't making money.
#2: From all the complaints in this forum, it's obvious there were some ongoing technical issues that kept not getting fixed. It's possible WoTC got fed up with Stainless and fired them.
At the same time, I believe some people were buying more paper cards than before. That was my case, as well as Mojo´s. And may be other´s as well.
So maybe they should not just see how much money they were getting directly with Magic Duels, but the real profit the company was getting during the game´s life span.

Magic duels was not so bad, especially compared with MTGO. MTGO support cost much more so I would not be surprised if profit is bigger in duels than in MTGO, not to mention that cards are redeemable in MTGO so if people decide to reedem cards, they can even go into negative profit.
After I saw this report, I'm more convined that Duels is not canceled because low profit(because if that is the case, MTGO should be canceled long time ago). I think we can espect another f2p digital game in September, but this time they will do it properly. Duels is very limited and full of bugs since beginning. But with little push, it can easily leave MTGO in dust. MTGO players should be worried, because if some digital platform does not earn enough money, compared to invested money, that is MTGO...
and i was loyal custumer to MTG for a Long long time even have the old microprose magic the gathering with Alpha card set. never again never.
"These are all exciting beginnings, but with new beginning comes one ending. In order to make room for the next generation of Magic digital products, Amonkhet will be the last new content update for Magic Duels. Hour of Devastation will not be released on the platform.
Magic Duels is still downloadable and playable, but our digital teams are focused on the next generation of Magic digital gaming. We're proud of what Duels accomplished, and we'll be using what we learned from that game to make even better Magic experiences in the future."

In other words, they are letting us down... (by us I mean Magic Duelists)
They gave you a FREE video game, and you had no right to expect pay-to-play quality from a FREE game. And if you were dumb enough to pay real money for virtual online goods, that's nobody else's fault.
Booyah.
