If you want confirmation of that simply read the many negative posts on this forum plus reviews.
The best adivice I can give you is to go to the official forums and have a read there. You will get a lot better overall balanced picture about trainz. You will need to register to see all of the subjects, but it will be worth it. https://forums.auran.com/trainz/forum.php
Also if you go to the screenshot forum, you will see a decent number of screenshots of what folk are achieving in T:ANE and other trainz versions. There is a video thread (top) inside the screenshot thread.

But for a more realistic cab operation you are still better with DTG Train Simulator. TANE is still more of a "model railway" game like you said. Being Australian there was limited content for Train Simulator so I switched to TANE and was blown away by all the Aussie stuff.
