The game rewards not playing it as a minesweeper
I want to preface the whole thing, by saying that players will always find a way to break games, and I think this is fine, but also the way this game can be broken hints at a gamedesign/gamebalance issue imho.

If we say that the game's goal to beat the final level, the best way to achieve this is to continuously unlock upgrades for the character, so we can successfully beat the harder levels. Therefore a gameplay that gains more runes is better.

The issue is, that currently the minesweeping/puzzle solving gameplay is not rewarded as well as another type of gameplay, as there is not a lot of runes that can be gained that way.

Due to monster kills potentially giving extra runes, a sort of monster hunter gameplay is much better rewarded. Pair this with a game balance issue, where stacking a lot of defense/dodge + adding a little bit of healing, and the gameplay devolves to this:

I'm guessing this is not intended, but this rewards me about 3 times as much runes in a single run, as puzzle solving. (Note, that I am not even super upgraded, 3-3 is as far I got in the game, with no additional characters unlocked)
