Duing mid-game when I first went down into the stone layer to find aluminium, all I had with me was a few gatling turrets.. Once dusk came I simple made a horizontal line into a area with solid stone and placed the turrets. This strategy worked quite well for a long time.
In the end after agitating every alien species I found it much easier to just jump down into the ocean at night and fend them off there.
Afterwards I made my way down to the ocean floor and built a base there with a small hydro-plant and a second teleporter. Thus allowing for quick travel back and forth to the surface.
Craft about 100 wooden paltforms and bring them with you. Before night comes, jump up and place yoru platforms as you go. After about 3 days, you should have a really deep tunnel you can easily climb out of.
Just don't kill anything when you're down there! Stay far enough up so you don't draw the black wasps and don't worry about the bats since they can't shoot through walls.
I will spend 'days' making the tunnel to their area, and always retreating to base when its close to dark. This may be slow, but it keeps me safe and gets the job done.
and then
Die
