deep dig strategy
I am trying to get aluminium. I need a strategy that will allow me to go bck to base quickly. Must account for water, as I often hit flooded caverns which makes it difficult.

Do most people build intermediary bases and do a little each day?
I am thinking of taking a turret with me, digging at an angle so that I can survive the night.

When I dug to get aluminium I went down the side of the chasm because this way when it rains or you get flooded the water falls down the chasm. As for night time I just went to the surface and ran around avoiding monsters although I suppose if you had enough fire power you could just build a sub-base

So did you put a side opening every 3 blocks so you could get out? ...seems that would be annoying and time-consuming.

Going back to base every night is a waste of time and it won't really get you anywhere.

Duing mid-game when I first went down into the stone layer to find aluminium, all I had with me was a few gatling turrets.. Once dusk came I simple made a horizontal line into a area with solid stone and placed the turrets. This strategy worked quite well for a long time.

In the end after agitating every alien species I found it much easier to just jump down into the ocean at night and fend them off there.

So how did you guys return to the surface, if you 'stair-cut' the whole way down it can be very time consuming.

First time you're going down, you pretty much have to run/dig your way back up to the surface to craft the new auto-builders and make a teleporter there. At least that's what I did.

Afterwards I made my way down to the ocean floor and built a base there with a small hydro-plant and a second teleporter. Thus allowing for quick travel back and forth to the surface.

ok thanks, I will try to get a teleporter first.

At first i used wooden platforms as they are cheap and I could get down in 10 secs and up in 45 secs

Well it was difficult, I had to spend one night very deep with really strong monsters. I only survived by digging deep into rock, across a deep fall and set-up a turret so I only had to deal with flying creatures. Then at dawn I made my way to the surface with copper and aluminium.

I dig a straight verticle tunnel from the surface. I go down as far and straight as possible. In order to prevent total flooding, I drain the tunnel out to the sides when I pass a cavern. I somtimes also build a 3 block platform that redirects water draining from above. Once you reach the underground ocean, drainage isn't a problem any longer and you'll find a ton of aluminum in the ocean ceiling.

Craft about 100 wooden paltforms and bring them with you. Before night comes, jump up and place yoru platforms as you go. After about 3 days, you should have a really deep tunnel you can easily climb out of.

Just don't kill anything when you're down there! Stay far enough up so you don't draw the black wasps and don't worry about the bats since they can't shoot through walls.

Once you kill a type of creature, they will attack you at night. I avoid the higher tier creatures, usually making a quick run into their territory for supplies and running out without killing them.

I will spend 'days' making the tunnel to their area, and always retreating to base when its close to dark. This may be slow, but it keeps me safe and gets the job done.

My trick to avoid killing new creatures is to stay next to the chasm and dig a straight hole down.

Yeah it is difficult to avoid the hard creatures in the depths. I built a deep bunker and still find that a small excursion can be difficult.

I usually just dig down right next to the chasm with platforms, making a 3x3 hollow box surrounded by 180 degree turrets for nighttime.

Dig
and then
Die
Is the correct stragegy.
