I like to enter the lake initially at the right side (i.e. left side of the volcano), building miniplatforms on the volcano "wall" all the way down to water level, having no strength issues of tall structures, and no chance of mobs breaking it. Thus, I am never without a working path up, although for a while there is quite a long run back to working teleporter before night falls (edit: because I'm lazy or low on materials and don't setup another teleporter near the volcano), but at least I learned to make 4 high tunnels so that I can do shotgun-assisted jump-running (works wonders).
I use that to right-side path to farm the initial things, and soon after to work the "tower" below my main vertical jump/fall-shaft (and then using that tower to setup wiring for powering teleporter down at the lake).
