Confused about Mastery Levels

OK so im legit confused when it comes to Mastery Levels.

I didn't do a lot of grinding like im only about Mastery Level 5 if i remember right.

My question is : how do we unlock higher masteries ?

Are they only unlocked by doing the regular missions ?

The moment you start the game it makes it clear in the nexus that they are separate things. When I launched the game in season 1, I could even skip the main story to go into Jokers earth stuff. It's as straight forward as it gets.

I thought it was clear as sky. Did every mission till I reached the 3 incursions in the base game, killed brainiac. From there I could continue grinding out mastery levels or just switch to the other earth in the nexus, and grind missions and incursions there to reach rank 40, kill green lantern brainiac and get Joker unlock. From there, I could start grinding mastery levels if I want to.
Right now I'm only rank 10 in season 1.

Yeah i already did, already got to like Fear Rank 45 i think and unlocked Joker earlier.

My question was because i was stuck on Mastery Level 4 or 5 i think - my question was how can i keep increasing and get to levels 20 or 30 because in the Finite Crisis mode im also at Mastery Level 4 or 5.

That was where my confussion was - how to increase Mastery Level in SEASON 1 without actually increasing it in FINITE CRISIS.

If you're playing SEASON 1, get to fire level 35 then fight braniac and get joker then you can up your mastery.. If you're playing PRESEASON, then you have to get ALL 3 incursions beat on sweating bullets, then do Killing time, then fight brainac again, and you should be able to get your finite crisis up higher... your finite crisis score mastery is, your finite crisis score divided by 3 (the 3 incursions) and that's how you can tell what mastery you are. Hope this helps.
