Sure they can but a product must be fit for the intended purpose. If they cut the umbilical cord, their product is not fit for the intended purpose of playing the game for the several seasons that would complete the story...then that opens them up to mercantile warranty issues.

WB knows this, they aren't stupid. Or maybe they are, forcing in Live Service was a mistake. A big, big one. Anyhow my point is this is Pandora's box for them and they'd be really naive to set industry precedent by discontinuing the product so soon after launch.
