For episode 1, I had a bit of confusion with that myself. Episode 1 is now only the incursion missions and the mayhem mission, the over world is now set to episode 2 (I don't love this decision, but it is "live service"). So just do the incursions and mayhem and unlock joker. Honestly I would just skip the rest of episode 1 as the poison gimmick isn't very fun but you do you.
If you are struggling with build ideas, you also can go and look on the leaderboards, and look at the top two for your character for each episode, might give you a bit of an idea on how to approach one.

They've done other Dev Updates which highlight streamer builds. For example, there's a shield harvest build that was shown during "Finite" which is still really effective for the new Duality episode. I'm easily working thru the GL shields & constructs even though I have NO poison effects.
Also remember, you might not have enough gear to properly kit out each character. Maybe focus on just one other character until you get the gear you want for it.
Also, do the side missions from Finite as those will unlock the ability to craft certain gear. Hack's neck bomb and traversal mod are extremely helpful if you decide to go for shield harvest build.
You switch episodes, while in the open world, from the Nexus tab. If you are in Duality (episode 2), tab over to left so you highlight Fear(episode 1). You should see a new prompt at the bottom of the screen which was not on Duality screen. Press the button and you are now in the Fear episode. If you're currently in Fear, then tab right for Duality and press the button for the prompt that appears.
For anyone that doesn't know, switching episodes is handled differently from how you switch seasons. To switch seasons, you currently need to back out of the game to the main menu. From there you can select the launch/original season (which is where you find Finite) or select season 1 (for Fear&Duality)
FYI; keep any legendary weapons that drop with "STACKED DECK" in the name. Stacked Deck shotguns are the best since the perk works off of every pellet that connects but smg's or ar's can perform well too.
