That's probably the biggest point for a live-service game.
As you said, for the fans there are way more arguments:
It disrespects the source material, pushes weird agendas, promotes stuff that's obviously okay when women do it.
They changed Deadshot for no reason (impostor theory?).
I'm so sad.
I would have suffered through super repetitive gameplay if the story was actually good. It's not. Its funny WB or Rocksteady expects people to buy this game and spend hours on hours of gameplay knowing you killed Batman in cold blood. And I am just supposed to forget about it. They want me to love their new Joker who is insecure etc but they killed Batman.
And people can be insensitive and say, it's just a game. Not a real character. What does it matter the gameplay is fun. People who like Batman like the stories from the comics to the tv shows, the movies the games. Because it inspires them. Batman has been part of my life for 40 years. And even if the character isn't real. It inspired me as kid, it's part of me. So yeah I see Batman dying it sucks.
Batman has died in the comics about 22 times. The problem is with a movie or game. A games takes like 8 years to make. So for 8 years people have to wait for another game to right the wrongs of this game. When a comic book can take an issue which is shorter in time.
I'm am just going to have to put Rocksteady on my blacklist of studios to ignore. I don't care about the future of this game. If by some miracle they retconned the whole story by having these characters that are killed are clones. I am not going to care what comes from them.
Yeah, almost the same for me, my first game was Batman Returns on SNES and I've been a huge fan ever since.
I bought DC (mostly Batman, some Justice League) merchandise for way more than 50K € already (Prime 1, Sideshow, DC Direct and Kotobukiya statues mainly).
While I don't mind Batman dying in any media, it still sucks how they did it and that wasn't even the worst part of the story.
And I agree with you, as a fan of the whole Arkhamverse I could've ignored many things from gameplay to graphics, but messing up the story was the worst thing that could happen :(

In Batman Arkham City, the Joker dies and being a villain that he was, he still got a respectable death. Batman was going to save the Joker and give him the cure the Titan toxic. You could tell that the Batman was trouble, he carries Joker out of the theatre. He was there to save the Joker but he also wanted to fix the Joker and I think that bothered him, That he wasn't able to fix the Joker.
In Batman Arkham Knight, Poison Ivy in her last moments does the right thing. She saves Gotham and dies in Batman arms.
Then you have Nora, Mr Freeze wife. She got to live for a bit on her own terms but it was done respectfully.
I don't see the respect here with the Flash or Green Latern, Superman or Batman. Hell Iron Man who started the whole MCU movies gets a more respectable death than Batman.
They could had a moment with Batman where he breaks free for a moment to talk to Harley to let her know that she had to shoot him and he wishes her farewell and that he is proud of her for doing what is right to save the world.
But no none of that.
Just pisses me off that this is how they treat these characters over a damn live service game.
