having enough supply is always good not just for ressources.
if you want money: produce, more than you need for yourself, and sell it.
Resource depletion has been considered but is not a feature of the game at this time.
Also is it okay to build facilities in hexs that aren't as dark red. Dark red hexs means more likely to get a better output? If you were mining ore persay?

The map filter for commodity shows how dense the resource deposit is. Higher density will allow more facilities of the relevant type to be built but has no impact on output. You might get two facilities on a low (light) concentration before it won't build any further where a high (dark) concentration would support all 6 nodes of that facility type.
