Save glitch?

I have worked my way through the game to the poit wehere I was ready to make my attack on Mengbilla. The first part of the attack involves a scenario where you must turn the catapults 180 degrees and bomb the walls of Mengbilla. Not difficult and it didn't take long. One glitch before this fight was that I could not give crossbow bolts to Naurim. With no opportunity to save you are then immediately taken to a huge long fight where you storm the outer walls of Mengbilla. This fight was not overly hard, but it took quite a long time. Once I won I was sent back to camp. I tried to quick save but no go. I tried a regular save and it said there was an error saving the game. Multiple times. I was forced to exit the game and restart. I hit continue and it brought me back to before the first Mengbilla sceanrio even started. That's about 2 hours of game time lost. I will try again, but I hope it was just a glitch, because if I go through all this again and can't save, I will be done with this game.

Same problem, different place. I've tried multiple times and keep getting the error. I even tried playing a mission passed the save problem to see if progressing further might fix the problem, but it didn't work (it just wasted me more time).

Anyone know a fix for this? Doesn't look like I can proceed any further if not. :(

I know this is years after the original post, but it still might be useful for others... I finally got around to playing BG2 and have been experiencing the same issue.

For me, the key that bypassed the save-error was--of all things--was making sure that I didn't sell off the Elven Bow.

I save-gamed after every sale and it was the item that appeared to trigger the save-game failure error. So, when I left it in my inventory, I was able to complete the game without further issue (and, in fact, the disappearing abilities and video-glitching on the inventory and character-sheet screens also stopped).
