What was the reason for killing Mega Man?
I know the same people are responsible for both Mega Man and Mighty No. 9 but I never understood the reason for abandoning Mega Man just to make a Mega Man clone.

The game still looks awesome and I can't wait to get it but at the same time it seems pointless to stop such a well known franchise to create a new franchise identicle to it.

Is a japanese thing. Inafune left Capcom in bad terms, so they kill his creation. Same will probably happen with Metal Gear.

Seems like Capcom simply owns the rights to the name "Mega Man", so Inafume is forced to do something different. Capcom cant sue him for creating a new character that's similar because he created the original. I'm not a lawyer but the reasoning seems plausable.

It's also Capcoms fault that Mega Man became a loss for them. Mega Man holds the record for the most cancled games and I'm pretty sure they lost a lot of money because of that. There were at least 4 Mega Man games that got cancled and never saw the light of day, it almost seems like it was Capcoms plan to squash it.

at least we got that mega man soccer game though
Business. It's pretty simple.

Mega Man doesn't appeal to the new generation of gamers. If a company cannot make a profit from it, why would they invest in that game or product?

A company may take a chance on a game that may become a big hit, if they think it will at least break-even.

I'd rather ask, why did Capcom refuse to make more if it's sellable? Unless it isn't worth making as sales weren't enough to cover the expenses.
Megaman isn't actually sellable anymore. That's the thing, times have changed and it's become a niche, though dedicated, audience that buys them. People will go on and on about Legends 3, but the truth is the megaman franchise's best seller was Megaman 2 ages ago and the series just never really topped the NES days. The legends series especially was a financial flop.

So while there is a demand for megaman, it's not enough for Capcom who would rather make a new resident evil or streetfighter, franchises which see bigger numbers than new megaman games, because that's what matters for capcom. The numbers. Not the quality, not the love and certainly not the fans. Most of Capcom's talented game designers, and the creators of their best franchises at that, bailed from the sinking ship years ago.

Basically, most classic franchises simply aren't profitable anymore. There aren't enough people who would buy a new megaman game on day one to justify the costs of making one. The same goes for a lot of other franchises, like the castlevania games.

Because Capcom, thats why
Lunaedge 4 Thg06, 2015 @ 4:56pm
From what I understand, it's mainly because of Inafune leaving Capcom (and Capcom being petty about that, which is still kind of unbelievable to me) and Mega Man not being as ridiculously popular as Resident Evil/Street Fighter currently are.

As for Mega Man being profitable or not, I have my doubts. I can't see why it would not be profitable to make new side-scrolling MM games, considering how the franchise has a solid following, the games not exactly being on the same level of megalomaniac AAA mega-productions in terms of cost, and digital distribution being widespread enough to make smaller-scale releases even more viable. A good MM game nowadays should sell at least as much as some of the most successful indie games, I think. Wouldn't that be enough to generate profit for Capcom?

Anyway, personally, I don't have much of a problem with Mega Man being dead, as I don't expect anything to last forever, but rather, the way it got killed off. At least three games cancelled in a row, with one of them being a much anticipated sequel, and barely addressing the situation afterwards is too damn insulting. I really would be happy to see MM off Capcom's hands and with some developer that at least make an effort in keeping most of their IPs alive as videogames (as opposed to just licensing it for comic books and action figures) in some way, like Nintendo.

It's not. They need/want big sellers. They set borderline impossible goals and get upset when games don't make it. They axed Clover because games like Viewtiful Joe, Godhand and Okami, new IPs mind you, did not sell as well on their first games as long estableshed franchises like Street Fighter and Resident Evil. Meanwhile, according to Capcom themselves the megaman franchise has sold roughly 30 million copies worldwide across 131 games. That's not an especially impressive number especially when the highest grossing one is still on the NES.

I agree with you Loonyedge. Also if MM wasn't profitable they would have stopped it a long time ago. If you're losing money on a franchise you wouldn't make 20+ games.

Let's hope M#9 does well so we can see a fresh start for an old classic.

Megaman is a money printing machine. This is an "honor" thing, it has nothing to do with money.

Except that you're wrong, like actually and factually wrong. Megaman Legends 3 was Inafune's pet project, when he quit capcom had zero reason to keep making it. Megaman hasn't been a money maker for ages, the X series went down the drain when they made X5 and beyond without inafune's consent and turned it into garbage. The classic series has never outsold Megaman 2. Every other spinoff has sold like hot garbage except maybe battle network two and three, but battle network four tanked that series and it never recovered. At least research this ♥♥♥♥ before you start spouting off inane BS.

So no. You don't actually know what you're talking about, you're just going to continue making vaguely racist assumptions because a japanese company had a falling out with one of its employees? Good job.
