How to entirely avoid hackers? Asking before buying
Is there a sure way to avoid hackers or any risk to my data when playing this game? I've heard so many things about people encountering hackers, not interacting with what they send you or you risk losing your entire save file or getting your info leaked.

I wanna buy this but absolutely refuse if these are the type of risks I might encounter. Thanks!

This was an issue before the latest update, and save corruption/deletion is an old issue long since fixed. Although you can still probably corrupt a save using mods on your end.

Sorry but I don't think I'll be spending on a VPN just to play a game :winter2019neutraldog:

The thing is even as of recently, I still hear people having these issues. Was the latest update fairly recent?
If you play offline by yourself with only one player slot no one can enter your lobby. Same rules apply to any lobby that is full, no outside actors can enter, especially now with manual approval. There are also free VPNs and you can change your Steam Network settings to Never if you're concerned about your IP address. Besides blocking every single person on Steam in the well known hacker group, I'm not sure what else there is.

I mean playing solo would kinda defeat the purpose of playing the social fishing game. Also I'm pretty sure the player cap on a private/friend server wouldn't affect a hacker?

Anyway thanks for the answer, this is way too complicated just to play a chill fishing game. Maybe if it changes, I'll consider it :winter2019joyfultearsdog:

You can set up an ask to join server which allows you to hand pick people joining the lobby (still hard to tell who is and isn't a hacker)

Or just do what people do in souls games: backup your save every time you join a server

Hackers ruining your save isn't nearly as common anymore, and backing up your save only takes like 10 seconds once you have a shortcut & folder for save set up (which takes less than 3 minutes to set up). In the case where your save is ruined you won't lose much cuz you can load your save backup

The only hackers I've run into recently just lagged the server so we had to restart it

I believe as of right now private lobbies with capped players are working fine in terms of preventing hackers from getting in. Completely understandable though!

It's mostly since I don't really have people to play with so I wanted to maybe join some people online for fun to hang out in public spaces but I don't want to take any risks if that implies taking a chance of seeing hackers. Sorry I wasn't clear about that part!

It kinda just sucks I have to make so many steps in order to protect myself where the game can't (and even then, its not guaranteed). It's a shame people ruin games like these
You don't have to worry about hackers corrupting your save file. I am pretty sure that is just a rumor, and I have never seen proof of it actually happening to anyone. Though if hackers could corrupt it, it would be by sending you a letter with a corrupted item, but you would have to accept the item in letter for it to break your save. Once again though, I have only heard people claim hackers could do this by people who didn't have it happen to them or someone they knew.

hackers, or actually, exploiters would be a better term, never did anything dangerous, sure they could scrape your ip but anyone can do that with any game that involves steam networking, and ips are harmless anyways.
also exploiters never corrupted save files, that rumor only started because people screwed with their save files and broke them around the same time the exploiters started showing up, and blamed them instead.
all they could do was join private lobbies and crash them sometimes, which i dont think they can do anymore, or at least i havent seen it happen recently.

As a webfishing exploiter myself, you're correct about the saves. But most of us "exploiters" just got bored of playing the game actually, game peaked in early November and with the lack of updates created a stale experience for me (but overall this game was very fun, and I still play time to time). Finally the 1.11/1.12 update had some cool additions but the overall security for this game still sucks (the code is very cheesy and likes to cut corners that could be easily exploited still) as parting wish we can still crash/join every private/public server/rename and some other fun stuff:3 God bless

First time playing Webfisher, in less than 10 min, I see 1 exploiter.

Now I have to figure out if whoever is trying to get into my email is from the game or elsewhere. The coincidence is crazy.
