best settings to avoid lag?

I just got this game yesterday and I absolutely love it!! however, my game lags terribly whenever I'm in a populated server, no matter how many folks are in there. however, when I run a private server my game runs perfectly with the same settings.

I've always been graphics-illiterate so I was wondering if anyone can recommend graphics settings to minimize lag? or any other tips? greatly appreciate the time, friends!

there are no settings to help that, the game isn't coded the best so people with lots of fish in their inventory causes lag no matter what
