Broken metal detector (?)

i once saw my friend use it from their pov and they had a red dot above their head, however i tried and not only do i not have a red dot, i have been around the entire map with no result of the detector doing literally anything. Am i just unlucky or is it bugged?

Just unlucky. Stick to following the paths, as most metal detector loot caches are directly beside existing paths
