Unfortunately, the standard assumption is that everyone is straight, so I feel like it removes part of the weight of the argument against the shirt TITLE being too expensive. Assumptions are a consequence of representation, accurate or otherwise.
The fact straight is considered the standard assumption is part of the problem. In otherwords, this joke simply continues to establish heteronormativity which isn't great for LGBT+ people or straight people.
The best solution would have been to ignore the trolls, include a Straight title with no quotations at the same price as the other. Let people define themselves how they want to be irregardless of what the status quo was or is. We can't change the past, but we can surely change the future.
The assumption of straightness does come from a statistical standard, where more than 80% of people identify as straight/hetero. Being different doesn't automatically mean being wrong, but there are definitely a lot of people who think that way, so I understand the concern.
