Camera Controls aren't right for me
So, I've played this before and the planetarium controls use to be alot more intuitive. but now when I boot up the planetarium, I have a huge weird crosshair in the middle of the screen and the camera wont do anything but rotate around an object (using mouse). I can W,A,S,D like normal, but it's like everything to do with the mouse is broken.

also, when I click left mouse button. I can only select things in the middle of the crosshair, I can't point with the mouse courser and select that way. I'm sure there is some setting I've hit that I'm unaware of, but I've spent all night searching and trying to figure it out with no luck.

How can I get the old controls back?

Camera controls haven't changed since pre-Steam era. That huge weird crosshair you are seeing is because you have a joystick or a joypad attached to your computer, or you have some software emulation of a joystick running, and SpaceEngine is registering it as a controller. The problem could be that SE is sensing a selection button always pressed down.

Go to Settings > Controls and on the "Controller" drop-down list on the top of the settings window you should see the name of the controller detected by SE. From there you can assign different buttons to different controls, if you want.
You can unplug the controller then rerun the program and the main controllers should be back to "Mouse and keyboard".

Ok, that did the trick. I had a HOTAS plugged in for other games and didn't realize it was overriding mouse and keyboard commands. It's weird, because I've always had A HOTAS, but recently got a new one. the old one didn't cause this issue.
