Textures don't load
Hello,

I am having major issues with graphics. Detailed surface textures only load on very small 'patches' of terrain, while literally meters away there will be a vast area still showing a very low resolution. The surface doesn't 'even out' in terms of detail even after leaving it to load for 10, 20, even 30 minutes. Also, as soon as I shift the camera, any detailed texture that has loaded 'beneath my feet', as it were, quickly reverts back to low-res. I have tried changing the graphics settings between low, high and medium, the LOD/terrain loading times etc. - nothing seems to work.

My computer specs:
Intel i7-7700HQ Processor
8GB RAM
Nvidia GTX 1050Ti 4GB
128GB SSD

Can anyone tell me if this is could be an issue with my hardware or is a problem/bug with the game? I know it's a demanding piece of software but I just can't see how it could take this long.

Thanks

I have to agree that there is something off about the LOD, I tried every setting there is (max res/speed/lod) and I still get obvious low res terrain patches a few meters away. In general texture loading seems a bit buggy, I often have to move away and back to load even a patch that I am directly looking at.

As for the slightly farther away screenshot, you would encounter the same level of detail in 0.980 on the same planet at the same distance. The screenshot you posted from that version was taken from much farther away, and on a very different planet.

I have no reason not to believe you at your word, yet something feels 'different'. I can hardly put it into words. I miss the "wow" effect I always had. Finishing loading is much too fast (5 secs, like what?), where the previous version of Space Engine sometimes needed half an hour, continuous updating and adding more details, resulting in much sharper details on my screen. Distant details look very washy. blocky and lack of details right now.

FPS is good by the way, that was not the case before.
The fast loading is not due necessarily to lower detail, but to the new terrain engine - terrain textures can be generated and loaded much more quickly now. A blog post was written about it on the website. But the size limit of these texture arrays does limit the maximum level of detail under some circumstances (if there are a lot of cloud layers, if using a very high resolution, etc.)

I don't have any issues with distant details being low res when LOD is set to maximum, can you take a screenshot of your graphics settings?

That sounds like a separate issue. Please provide your log file (se.log, located in the "system" folder of your SE installation).

How can send it?
You can paste its contents at Pastebin, or upload it somewhere and share it. Pastebin is probably fastest.

I don't have these issues on my PC, can you post your log file?

Your computer does not meet the minimum requirements for running SpaceEngine. SE requires a discrete GPU with at least 2 GB of VRAM. Your system is using integrated Intel graphics, which do not work properly with SE.

I'll look for a proper GPU and hopefully I can enjoy the total experience.

Thank you for your help!

Is this okay?

Previous version gave me MUCH more details, almost photorealistic (set landlod 2)!

Unable to find the exact location on the older version, but it took me 2 minutes to take a screenshot with much higher level of detail (0.9.8.0). Especially in the distance..

Disabling texture compression seems to have solved my original problem - detailed surface textures load much more evenly now. So thank you very much for that!

I do agree with Vette Pietsa though - it seems distant terrain is at a lower resolution compared to 0.9.8.0. Obviously you guys know the engine you've built inside and out, but you might want to investigate the issue further (just my view, not complaining).

EDIT: Distant terrain seems to be loading fine now, maybe my eyes were deceiving me.

Your pictures aren't comparing similar terrain: you're showing noisy spiky mountains in 0.980, while showing smoother, eroded mountains in 0.990. I'm not saying you're wrong, but in the screenshots you've showed so far you're comparing fundamentally different types of terrain, which will look very different from each other regardless of LOD.
